There’s no question about it: I absolutely thrive in the summertime. And while a big reason for that is the sunshine, outdoor events and dining alfresco, I’d be lying if I didn’t also credit my wardrobe. I love loose, flowy fashion pieces that look polished but feel so, so comfy, which is why I always snap up new sundresses, linen-blend pants and lightweight tops once summer comes back around. I tell myself that my New York City wardrobe deserves a little love, and I’m sticking to it — especially since I found super cute finds at some of my favorite retailers.

Abercrombie & Fitch, Athleta, Free People, Petal & Pup and more editor-loved brands have unbelievably chic summer staples that immediately caught my eye. I’m talking about picks that embody that ‘It’ girl look with tons of breathability, which is essential for surviving summer. Loose silhouettes, light fabrics and bright colors are all part of my checklist, giving me the comfort I need while walking from Point A to Point B . . . and the trendy style that serves once I arrive at my destination.

15 Editor-Approved NYC Summer Wardrobe Staples

1. My Favorite: I love a denim moment, but the combination of heavy fabric and hot weather makes me forgo this dream. This Gap tie-front mini dress is the exception, thanks to its light, loose fabric. I’m also into the peasant-style front that is super trendy right now.

2. Runner-Up: Sometimes I complicate things when trying to put together an outfit, which is why I appreciate this two-piece set that does the style work for me. The square-neck tank and pleated shorts match perfectly together and do well as separates.

3. Going Viral: Haven’t you heard? Babydoll tops and dresses are trending again. This eyelet tie-front top gives you the same look in summer form.

4. Quite the Charmer: One look at this peasant-style midi dress and I had to have it. The flattering basque waist, tie-front detail and soft gingham print are giving fairytale princess vibes.

5. Boho Babe: Free People has a way of delivering effortlessly cool style with a laid-back appeal, and that’s exactly what you get with this coquettecore peplum top. The corset silhouette hugs curves without feeling tight. Read: it’s extremely flattering on practically every body type.

6. Everyday Essential: Tank tops are a must for summer, and this top-rated option is on my radar. I like the halter neckline and loose fit, which transitions nicely from day to night.

7. Coastal Chic: Old Navy dresses are my summer go-tos because they’re always stylish and extremely affordable. The best part is that pieces like this coastal-chic number look like styles found at a Nantucket boutique. And you know they cost five times as much as this $12 cutie.

8. Anything But Basic: Apron-style dresses are usually pretty plain, however, this scalloped-trim option is anything but. The white piping and bold color are enough to get all eyes on you.

9. Editor-Loved: I already have this Abercrombie & Fitch dress in red, and I love it so much, I’m planning to get another in a different color, like say, the buttery yellow hue. The basque waist hugs my curves, the square neckline subtly shows off the girls and the built-in bra lets me go without one.

10. No Brainer: Clothes with smocking are big selling points; they stretch nicely, let me go bra-free and fit well to my petite frame. This smocked tank top is no exception. Plus, the linen-blend design means I won’t sweat through it while running to the subway.

11. Game Changer: Abercrombie’s classic pleated trousers are my work wardrobe go-tos, so I was extremely excited to find this airy linen version that’s perfect for the season. The brand’s Curve Love design is also chef’s kiss for anyone who struggles with waist gapping.

12. Cozy-Chic: I don’t usually look for ‘cozy’ pieces in the summer, but this polo-style mini dress has me breaking my streak. The European linen makeup means that the dress is softer than traditional weaves, so I fully expect to take hammock cat naps while wearing it.

13. Playful Pattern: Summer wardrobes aren’t complete without gingham pieces, like this Quince tank dress. It feels on trend for the season, and the breathable fabric is perfect for Central Park picnics and beach days alike.

14. Low-Key Genius: Anyone who knows me is fully aware that I live in Athleta. I have the longline bra version of the sporty Transcend Scoop Dress, which has bust support and sleek spaghetti straps. What makes this dress special is the built-in shorts that prevent thigh chafing. Psst, the hidden pockets are also stellar.

15. Last But Not Least: Any sort of traveling calls for lounge-like clothes, but I refuse to wear sweats in public. These breezy wide-leg pants give me all the comfort I’m looking for with the style I crave.
