PHILADELPHIA — Mets baseball president David Stearns has maybe his toughest assignment ever now, which is to clean up the mess he’s made.

We don’t discount the possibility he can do it, as he helped turn tiny-market Milwaukee into a perennial winner. But it’s going to take a near-perfect summer and winter after two straight disastrous offseasons in which he mostly collected the infirmed and underperforming.

“The Mets are a mess,” one major league scout said, succinctly summing up the situation.

Cleanup on 41 Seaver Way begins soon.
