The Jets fell to 1-1 on Sunday with a crushing 20-17 overtime loss to the Packers. Here are some thoughts and observations from the game:
1. There is a lot of focus on Aaron Glenn’s game management from this loss and rightfully so. There were a number of questionable decisions by Glenn. It makes me wonder how calling the defense is affecting him as the head coach. This is a topic we talked about a lot this summer and Glenn said he felt like he had people around him to help him manage the game. He leans on game management coordinator Jon Berger in these situations but it felt like on Sunday he had some missteps and then his postgame explanations were not always clear.
It was a big deal at last year’s Super Bowl that Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald was the first defensive play-calling head coach to win the Super Bowl. It underscores how tough it is to do both. It is easier to call the offense as a head coach because more game management situations arise when you are on offense from timeout usage to clock management. It is harder to be engaged in those offensive situations if you are going over what went right or wrong defensively on the last series and trying to make adjustments.
Look, this is one bad day for Glenn this season after a good Week 1. I’m not ready to crush him off this game. Many of the decisions he made could be argued both ways, in my opinion. But Glenn’s decision making is now under the microscope and he can’t afford too many more games where his decisions backfire like they did on Sunday.
