Tulsa King is going to throw viewers for a loop when season 4 introduces some surprises — including some potential character disappearances.
“It’s great as always,” McDonough, 60, exclusively told Us at the UFC 331 on Paramount+ red carpet before his wife, Ruve McDonough, added, “Tulsa King’s all about the unknown.”
Ruve went on to tease what is in store, saying that fans should expect an air of mystery, “We don’t know where anything’s going or where the characters are going. Some disappear. Some just show up. Tulsa King is [just] amazing.”
The couple, who have been married since 2003, gushed over Sylvester Stallone‘s work as Dwight. Looking ahead at season 4, which premieres October 16, Neal and Ruve promised that the production team has plenty of surprises up their sleeves.
Tulsa King follows Stallone as an American Mafia caporegime who has been recently released from prison in New York and is sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he begins to set up a criminal organization.
In addition to Stallone and McDonough, the show stars Martin Starr, Jay Will, Vincent Piazza, Garrett Hedlund, Dana Delany and Frank Grillo. Ahead of creator Taylor Sheridan‘s move to NBC, Paramount+ offered an update on Tulsa King’s future at the streaming service.
“We’re about to announce the premiere date for Tulsa King season 4, that one is coming out. It’s an incredible season,” Jane Wiseman, Paramount+’s head of originals, told Deadline in August. “Sly is in great form in the show, and there’s going to be some surprises. But that show is continuing.”
Wiseman added of whether the series could return after season 4, “It could. Between Tulsa and Landman, which Taylor is writing right now. Frisco, Dutton, Madison, we have a lot of business, and we’re going to be in business for time to come.”
Variety previously reported that a writers’ room for Tulsa King season 5 is now open. The show will change filming locations amid the open writers’ room, filming in New York instead of Atlanta. Despite being largely filmed in Atlanta, the show will make the swap and relocate to New York.
The outlet claimed the decision to change filming locations was driven by both budgetary and story line considerations. With New York increasing its film tax incentive program twice in the last three years, Tulsa King made the official move for the monetary benefits.
The potential shakeup comes after Tulsa King has faced some challenges behind the scenes. The Paramount+ series started with Terence Winter as the showrunner alongside Sheridan. Once Tulsa King was renewed for season 2, Winter resigned as showrunner due to creative differences but returned as the series’ head writer.
Sheridan opted not to fill the role of showrunner for season 2, instead hiring a director and executive producer to oversee day-to-day production.
Dave Erickson went on to join the show as a showrunner for seasons 3. By season 4, Tulsa King went into production without a showrunner in place and relied on Scott Stone, who was an executive in charge of production from 101 Studios, to oversee the show day to day while Winter was back again as a writer.
Sheridan, for his part, previously closed a major with NBCUniversal. The five-year overall deal for film, TV and streaming will begin January 1, 2029, after Sheridan’s TV deal with Paramount — which goes through 2028 — officially ends.
