Alejandro Tosti was left holding the bag.
The Argentinian golfer’s caddie quit halfway through the opening round of the PGA Tour’s Biltmore Championship Asheville on Thursday in a bizarre scene.
Cliff Ellis, on the bag for the 30-year-old at the 18th hole — Tosti’s ninth of the day — “dropped the bag, took off his caddie bib and walked off,” according to a Golfweek source.
The pair had reportedly been out of sorts since a practice round on Tuesday, but Tosti, who has a history of behavioral issues on the course, was shocked when Ellis did not return from what he believed was a bathroom break.
“He couldn’t keep up with eight pars in a row,” he told Golfweek via text, adding multiple laughing emoji.
Tosti finished the round with a 1-over 72, tying him for 99th.
The fiery golfer has had several run-ins with his caddies, including an expletive-laced incident with Ray Yoel in 2023 that ended with a suspension for conduct unbecoming a professional from the Korn Ferry Tour.
Earlier this year, he went viral for making his caddie wear a customized bib that read “NEED A WIFE” at the Valspar Championship — a reference to Tosti’s own love life.
It’s not just caddies that have friction with Tosti, with one Korn Ferry player describing him as a “Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde type.”
“I’m only a jerk Thursday through Sunday,” he allegedly told a Tour veteran who asked him why he’s like this. “That’s my chance to make money, and I don’t like anyone getting in the way of me getting my money.”
He’s long been well aware that his demeanor is a facet of his game that needs work.
“It’s been the challenge for me my whole life, dealing with myself,” he told Golfweek in 2024.
Tosti was set to tee off again at 1:49 p.m. ET Friday — it remains to be seen if who will be lugging his clubs around the The Cliff at Walnut Grove for Round 2.
