Andrea Mitchell’s time as an MSNBC anchor is finally coming to an end.
After initially announcing her plans to leave her long-running daytime news show, “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” back in October, the veteran journalist’s final day behind the desk will be Friday.
The star reporter’s exit is not a retirement, however. She will continue to work for NBC News as its chief foreign affairs correspondent and chief Washington correspondent going forward.
During her initial announcement, which she made on her show, Mitchell told audiences she would go on hosting through the 2024 presidential election and up to Inauguration Day but said she was eager to get back in the trenches as an on-the-ground reporter.
“After 16 years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most: more connecting, listening and reporting in the field,” she said at the time.
Leaders at NBC News praised Mitchell in a company memo after her career pivot was made public, saying, “Andrea remains one of the country’s foremost and most trusted experts on foreign policy and domestic politics.”
“Her deep sourcing and ability to land the biggest-name news-making interviews are unmatched,” the statement continued. “We are so pleased that she will remain an essential part of the News Group for years to come.”
Premiering back in 2008, “Andrea Mitchell Reports” was the longest-running show in MSNBC’s daytime lineup.
During her tenure with NBC, she has covered every presidential election since 1980, when Republican nominee Ronald Reagan would go on to defeat incumbent Democratic President Jimmy Carter.
Mitchell’s departure from her namesake show is just one of several recent shakeups in MSNBC and NBC News’ lineups.
Former “Meet the Press” moderator Chuck Todd left NBC last Friday after two decades with the media giant.
Earlier in January, Mehdi Hasan exited MSNBC after the network’s decision to shutter his Sunday show.
