Ben Shelton has everyone’s attention at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships – on and off the court.

Shelton, the No. 10 ranked player in the world, defeated Alex Bolt in his opening round match at Wimbledon. He was put to the test with tiebreaks in the second and third sets, but he prevailed when it mattered most. Next up for the hard-hitting lefty is a showdown with Rinky Hijikata.

Off the court, Shelton is trending because of his politics. Earlier this year, his father referred to their family as conservative. However, he wasn’t exactly referring to their political views.

“As a kid, Ben just liked doing things his own way,” Bryan Shelton said. “Our family is very conservative, and everything he wore had to be neon. He wanted his hair to be long . He just wanted to do things differently . But somewhere along the way, a little switch went off.”

That being said, Shelton turned plenty of heads during the 2024 presidential election.

On Election Day 2024, tennis fans ripped Shelton for posting a “tone-deaf” message on his Instagram Story.

Before the election was decided, Shelton shared a photo that said “No matter who is president Jesus is king.” It didn’t seem like a bad post, but the public despised it.

“Yikes tell me you voted for Trump without telling me you voted for Trump,” one fan commented.

“We already knew he was for Trump,” another fan wrote.

Shelton has remained fairly quiet about his political views since that post. We can’t say the same for fellow American tennis star Coco Gauff.

Gauff previously referred to Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris as a “down period” for Americans.

“I remember after the election and everything, it felt like a down period a little bit. My mom told me during Riyadh, try to win the tournament just to give people something to smile for. That’s what I was thinking about today,” Gauff said.

We’ll see if Shelton gives the people something to talk about when he returns to the court Thursday.
