David Blackledge, executive director of the Miss Mississippi Competition, is The Vicksburg Post’s Man of the Year.

Born in Laurel, Mississippi, Blackledge moved to Vicksburg in 1981 after graduating from the University of Mississippi. Encouraged by his sisters who lived in the area, he began his career at Merchants National Bank and quickly became involved in the community. It wasn’t long before he found his calling with the Miss Mississippi Competition, initially volunteering through the local JCs service organization.

“My first job with the pageant was taking up tickets and working in the concession stand at the old auditorium,” Blackledge recalled. Over the years, he took on various roles within the organization before being asked to serve as executive director in 1992. What began as a short-term commitment became a lifelong labor of love.

“I never thought I would end up serving in this position for so long, but it’s truly been an honor,” Blackledge said. “We’ve helped raise scholarship money for these young women and helped them further their careers. It’s been very rewarding.”

Under Blackledge’s leadership, the Miss Mississippi Competition has become one of the top organizations in the Miss America system. Vicksburg’s event is one of the few state competitions televised live, reaching audiences statewide and beyond through live streaming.

“You can only have one winner, but when these young ladies continue to come back year after year, it shows they want to be part of our Miss Mississippi family,” Blackledge said. “That’s the rewarding part.”

Beyond his work with Miss Mississippi, Blackledge is involved in the Vicksburg community. He serves as president of the Vicksburg Kiwanis Club, is on the board of directors for the Old Courthouse Museum and the River City Rescue Mission, and holds leadership roles at First Baptist Church, where he is a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

“David is a very upright, fine Christian gentleman,” said longtime friend Winky Freeman. “He’s been in leadership positions in civic clubs, church, and other community activities. He’s dedicated to making a positive impact.”

Mike Jones, a friend and fellow volunteer in the pageant world, emphasized Blackledge’s selflessness.

“David is known in the community for all that he’s done over the years,” Jones said. “He’s well-deserving of this award, and I’m glad he’s getting it.”

For Blackledge, his work is not about recognition but about giving back.

“This is my gift to the community,” he said. “I’m a non-paid volunteer. I wouldn’t accept payment for it. It’s something I truly enjoy and a way to serve others.”

The Miss Mississippi Competition brings approximately 2,000 visitors to Vicksburg annually, generating significant economic benefits for local businesses. Hotels, restaurants, florists, and other establishments see a boost in revenue during the four-night competition.

“It makes a huge financial impact on our community,” Blackledge said. “It also gives Vicksburg exposure on a statewide and even worldwide level.”

Blackledge said that faith was an important factor in his success.

“God has truly blessed me by giving me the opportunity to serve this community,” he said. “It’s been a privilege and an honor to help others and make a difference.”
