President Biden’s re-election campaign was freaking out Monday over the US Supreme Court ruling in Donald Trump’s immunity case, claiming the court just gave the ex-prez a potential “key to a dictatorship.”
The nation’s top justices ruled that Trump has absolute immunity from prosecution for any “official acts” he took in office, although it’s still not clear whether his alleged 2020 election subterfuge falls into that category.
But the decision allows him to go “unchecked” should he get re-elected in November, despite becoming more “unhinged” since the Jan. 6, 2021, riot, Dem campaign officials warned reporters in a press call.
The ruling will give the 78-year-old GOP candidate the legal right to “jail his political opponents,” “round up Latinos in detention camps and deport them for no reason” and have his vice president overturn election results, if all those are deemed “official acts,” claimed Quentin Fulks, Biden-Harris 2024 principal deputy campaign manager.
In the 6-3 Supreme Court decision, the justices stressed that the “president is not above the law,” and that “not everything the President does is official.” But they left it to the lower courts to define what falls into “official acts.”
Regardless of how lower courts will define “official acts,” the ruling does give Trump more time in his Jan. 6 case, as the trial date will be pushed back — possibly to after the November election.
“They just handed Donald Trump the keys to a dictatorship. The Supreme Court just gave Trump a remissions slip to assassinate and jail whoever he wants to gain power,” the Biden campaign rep claimed, arguing that its “a pivotal moment for our country” and that the Biden campaign will continue to “attack” Trump and “hold him responsible.”
Other Biden allies on the press call expressed a similar degree of panic.
Biden surrogate Harry Dunn, a police officer who defended the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, said Trump was the “single greatest threat to our democracy” and that the ruling made that “even more” true.
“I don’t know if it’s a good morning. … Obviously this Supreme Court decision is devastating,” added Biden surrogate Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas).
In a statement, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison said, “Today’s ruling only underscores the stakes of this election – this is not just about partisan politics, this is about freedom.
“It’s hard to believe, but Trump has only become more unhinged in the years since he lost to Joe Biden, promising to be a dictator on ‘Day One,’ suggesting the ‘termination’ of our Constitution to overturn valid election results, and warning of a ‘bloodbath’ if he loses again,” Harrison said.
“The only thing standing between Donald Trump and his threats to our democracy is President Biden – and the American people will stand once again on the side of democracy this November,” the Dem big said.
Other top Democrats also weighed in.
“Today, the Supreme Court has gone rogue with its decision, violating the foundational American principle that no one is above the law. The former president’s claim of total presidential immunity is an insult to the vision of our founders, who declared independence from a King,” Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said on X.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) posted, “This disgraceful decision by the MAGA SCOTUS—which is comprised of 3 justices appointed by Trump himself—enables the former President to weaken our democracy by breaking the law.
“It undermines SCOTUS’s credibility and suggests political influence trumps all in our courts today,” he said.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) also criticized the Supreme Court for becoming “consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control” and said that she intends to file “articles of impeachment upon our return.”
Meanwhile, Trump celebrated the court’s ruling in a post on Truth Social.
“BIG WIN FOR OUR CONSTITUTION AND DEMOCRACY. PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!” Trump declared.
He added in another post: “The Supreme Court totally dismantled most of the charges against me. Joe Biden should now call off his ‘dogs.’ Our Country should now be focused on GREATNESS again!”
Going forward, Fulks said he hopes the hopes the Supreme Court decision will be seen by the American people as an “amplifier” for what the campaign had already been saying — that Trump wants to be a “dictator.”
The former president had previously said he would serve as “dictator” on Day One of his second term.
“Under no circumstances, you are promising America tonight, you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody?” Fox News anchor Sean Hannity asked Trump in an interview taped in Davenport, Iowa, in December.
“Except for Day One,” Trump responded. “I want to close the border, and I want to drill, drill, drill.”
Trump’s team did not immediately respond to an inquiry from The Post.
