Former President Joe Biden will attend former Vice President Dick Cheney’s funeral in Washington on Thursday, a spokesperson for Biden confirmed to POLITICO.
Cheney, who died from complications of pneumonia earlier this month at the age of 84, was “guided by a strong set of conservative values,” Biden said in a statement after Cheney’s death was announced.
“While we didn’t agree on much, he believed, as I do, that family is the beginning, middle and end,” Biden added.
Biden will be among a handful of high-profile leaders to attend the funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. Cheney’s daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), and former President George W. Bush, whom Cheney served two terms under, are also expected to attend.
Bush will give a tribute at Thursday’s ceremony, according to the cathedral’s website, and Cheney’s daughter and grandchildren are expected to deliver remarks as well.
It is unclear if other presidents will be in attendance.
Though former President Barack Obama extended condolences to Cheney’s family, President Donald Trump has remained silent on the former vice president’s death. Cheney endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris over Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Nov. 4 that Trump was “aware” of Cheney’s death and that flags had been lowered to half-staff “in accordance with statutory law.”
