AUGUSTA, Ga. — The son had just completed his day’s work, one of the best days of work he’s ever produced, carding a career-low score at a Masters and leading the tournament when he finished his round.
The father, who’s been his son’s coach for all of his son’s life, walked expressionless to a secluded spot under the big oak tree outside of the Augusta National clubhouse for a breather.
A short time later, the mother arrived under the same tree and looked equal parts exhausted and exhilarated as she talked about what she’d just witnessed for the previous five hours. Her son, who’d just shot 65 in Saturday’s third round and made up eight shots on Rory McIlroy, is tied for the Masters lead at 11-under par with McIlroy.
“This has always been his dream,’’ Barbara Young told The Post. “I think Dave and I being in the golf business and knowing how hard this is, you don’t think this is going to happen. I know he was talented, but there’s just so far talent can take you.
