SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Two guys who have not eaten a green vegetable in five years sat down to play chess and discuss chickens.

This is not the start of a joke.

This is Super Bowl week.

This is Patriots receiver Mack Hollins, who left his copy of “Pasteurized Poultry Profits” — the book that sat on his media podium Wednesday — in his hotel room Thursday. Hollins instead brought with him an electronic chess board that encourages beginners by revealing which moves are possible when a piece is touched.
