There will be a hockey game played at Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday night, but this game will be about honoring the lives of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.
The Flames are hosting the Blue Jackets and the Gaudreau Family which will include Johnny’s wife Meredith, their two kids, his mom and dad, and sisters.
There will be a video tribute as well as a ceremonial puck drop with Mikael Backlund and CBJ forward Sean Monahan, as well as the Gaudreau Family.
After the tragedy, Flames fans created a giant memorial outside of the Saddledome. Fans left all sorts of items that the Flames kept and turned into charitable donations.
Per the Flames Foundation:
-
At the Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau memorial, fans left 229 hockey sticks on the steps of the Scotiabank Saddledome. Those sticks have been used to make benches, which will be donated to local arenas.
-
Many, many bags of Skittles were left at the Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau memorial and we pledged to donate 13 cents to the Calgary Food Bank for every single Skittle. With 105,563 Skittles, that totaled a $13,723 donation, which will provide hampers for 130 families.
-
1600 purple sports drink bottles were left at the Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau memorial, which were emptied and donated to the KidSport Calgary recycling program. Johnny was a supporter of KidSport Calgary, acting as an ambassador and donating to their Goals For Kids program.
-
103 stuffed toys were left at the Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau memorial, which will be donated to Parachutes For Pets for their Lily & Dexter’s Legacy Program.
-
124 jerseys were left at the Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau memorial, which were laundered and are being used to design quilts that will be donated to local charitable organizations.
