Did presidential election results lead to changes in acclaimed HBO TV series “The White Lotus?”
In a recent interview, Copley native Carrie Coon said a part of her corporate lawyer character’s backstory was left on the cutting room floor.
In a “Harper’s Bazaar” piece, Coon said that her character, Laurie, at one point discussed her daughter who was possibly non-binary or transgender.
Copley native Carrie Coon stars in the acclaimed HBO series “The White Lotus,” which returns to the channel and on streamer Max Sunday.
Given the interaction of Laurie with her friends Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) and Kate (Leslie Bibb) as they vacation at a luxury resort in Thailand that is important context. Yes, there’s backbiting among friends, but one particular exchange between the trio in the third episode involved Laurie and Jaclyn trying to discern whether Kate voted for President Donald Trump.
“You see Laurie struggling to explain it to her friends, struggling to use they/them pronouns, struggling with the language, which was all interesting,” she said. “It was only a short scene, but for me, it did make the question of whether Kate voted for Trump so much more provocative and personally offensive to Laurie, considering who her child is in the world.”
Ultimately, the scene was cut because creator Mike White deemed the topic too important to use in that regard in light of Trump’s win in November, Coon said.
When will the third season finale of ‘The White Lotus’ on HBO?
Coon has been mentioned as a potential Primetime Emmy Award nominee for her nuanced portrayal of Laurie. She’s received two prior Emmy nominations, one for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for the HBO series “The Gilded Age” in 2024 and in 2017 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for “Fargo.”
The final episode of “The White Lotus” airs on HBO and streams on Max Sunday, April 6 at 9 p.m.
