A judge has ruled against Measure A, which Fresno County voters passed in March 2024.

In 2022, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 759 (AB 759), which required counties to hold sheriff and district attorney elections at presidential elections.

Measure A changed the county’s charter and moved the election cycles for the Fresno County sheriff and district attorney back to the gubernatorial cycle.

Fresno County officials want to keep the sheriff and district attorney elections in non-presidential years.

The California Justice Department sued Fresno County on Friday over recent voter-approved changes to the election cycles of the county’s top two law enforcement leaders.

Fresno County Superior Court Judge D. Tyler Tharpe ruled against Measure A on Monday in Fresno.

The County of Fresno is disappointed with the Fresno County Superior Court’s ruling on Measure A, as Assembly Bill 759 dismisses the will and votes of Fresno County residents. The Board of Supervisors will be discussing this decision and any potential next steps during the Closed Session at the next Board meeting on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
