Daniel Craig will not be reporting for superhero active duty.

The actor has dropped out of consideration for the upcoming DC Universe movie Sgt. Rock. The starring role would have reunited Craig with Luca Guadagnino, his director in the 2024 film Queer.

While Craig’s involvement in the World War II-themed superhero tale was announced in November, Craig never actually committed to the role, according to Variety.

DC Studios declined to comment on the casting situation.

The character of Sgt. Rock first appeared in comics in 1959 as a non-commissioned officer in the United States Army pushing his unit through Europe in World War II.

Co-chiefs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, are reportedly stoked on the Sgt. Rock movie and anticipate it being a straight-ahead war film. Their search for the titular role’s actor continues.

Up next for Craig in Hollywood will be him reemerging in the role of Benoit Blanc for Wake Up Dead Man, the third movie in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out mystery series. It is slated to arrive in the second half of 2025.

Guadagnino, who is still adapting Sgt. Rock, will next be directing the Julia Roberts thriller After the Hunt and a new version of American Psycho with Austin Butler.

Queer netted wonderful reviews, especially for the actor’s performance in the William S. Burroughs novella adaptation. Craig nabbed numerous acting nominations including from the Golden Globes and Critics Choice, but was overlooked by the Academy Awards.

The Sgt. Rock movie is reportedly eyeing a summer 2025 production if they can find their leading man.
