The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has rolled out its list of nominations for the 52nd annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which will take place this year on October 17 in Pasadena (moving from the show’s longtime June berth). Kicking things off Wednesday afternoon, NATAS announced nominations in categories including daytime drama series, daytime talk series, lead actor in a daytime drama series and lead actress in a daytime drama series. The remainder of this year’s nominations were announced on Thursday.

Leading the tallies: “Days of our Lives” (Peacock), “General Hospital”  (ABC) and “The Young and the Restless” (CBS). The soaps were the only three nods this year in the outstanding daytime drama series category (after six shows were nominated in the field last year).

More from Variety

The decision to move the Daytime Emmys to October came as NATAS realigned the timing for some of its biggest shows. Last month, the News & Documentary Emmys, which usually take place in the fall, moved to June instead. At last year’s event, “General Hospital” won the top daytime drama award for the fourth year in a row, while legendary actor and comedian Dick Van Dyke made history, winning the 2024 Daytime Emmy award for guest performer in a daytime drama series (via Peacock’s “Days of Our Lives”). At 98, that made Van Dyke the oldest actor to receive a Daytime Emmy win.

The 52nd Daytime Emmys eligibility window was between Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2024 — which is why CBS’ new soap opera “Beyond the Gates,” which premiered in 2025, isn’t included in the nomination tally just yet. As for a broadcast partner for this year’s Daytime Emmys, that’s still TBD. CBS’ most recent two-year deal to air the kudocast ended last year.

Among major changes to this year’s Daytime Emmy competition are new categories including Outstanding Emerging Talent in a Daytime Drama Program, which looks at new performers “on their first Daytime contract with no previous Daytime Emmy acting nominations. They must have been on their Daytime Drama for two years or less, and must be onscreen in a speaking role with at least one multi-episode story arc. There is no age restriction.”

Also, the Culinary Series category has been split into two: Outstanding Culinary Instructional Series and Outstanding Culinary Cultural Series; while the Outstanding Travel, Nature, and Adventure category was also divided into Outstanding Travel and Adventure Program and Outstanding Nature and Science Program.

And then NATAS has added “Outstanding Regional Content in a Daytime Genre,” which it stresses is not an Emmy-eligible category, but instead an award for any regional program winner “that won at their home contest between the dates of June 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025 in the following applicable categories: Lifestyle, Magazine, Entertainment, and Arts/Entertainment Long or Short Form.” Winners will receive a crystal pillar trophy instead of an Emmy.

One other major change: instead of a separate Creative Arts ceremony, the 52nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be held at a single ceremony this year.

“We’re excited to recognize the exceptional individuals and teams who make daytime television great every year and in some cases, every day,” said NATAS prexy/CEO Adam Sharp. “As the Daytime landscape continues to expand, we’re excited to introduce new categories to recognize the boundary-pushing work being done, and we’re enthusiastic to convene with and celebrate the whole Daytime community in one ceremony.”

Sharp and Lisa Armstrong are executive producers with Rachel Schwartz serving as Head of the Daytime Emmy Awards. The firm of Lutz & Carr, LLP, provides accounting services for the competition.
