Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton’s final movie was shot in Western North Carolina; now, we know the cause of her death.

People magazine was first to report the information, citing a family statement.

“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the statement to People read.

“She loved her animals, and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much-appreciated tribute to her.”

What was Diane Keaton’s final movie? ‘Summer Camp’ was shot in Western NC

Keaton’s final role was in “Summer Camp,” a 2024 comedy about three friends reuniting at their childhood summer camp. The movie was filmed in several WNC locations, including Camp Pinnacle and UNC Health Pardee, Hendersonville, and Blue Ridge Community College, Flat Rock.

“We had over 1,000 extras from the local area,” the film’s producer, Dori Rath, told the Hendersonville Times-News in a previous interview. “The area is chock full of summer camps, and each camp has more than 4,000 families that attend.”

Rath also told reporters that Keaton and her co-stars Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard were enjoying their time in WNC.

“Diane and her beauty team have been in awe of the white squirrels and the amazing birdsong soundtrack to which we are treated every day,” Rath said.

What was Diane Keaton’s cause of death?

A copy of Keaton’s death certificate, obtained by USA TODAY on Oct. 16, showed her “immediate cause” of death was primary bacterial pneumonia. A few days had passed between the onset of her illness and her death at a Santa Monica hospital. No other significant contributing conditions were listed for Keaton’s death.

Keaton died the morning of Oct. 11, 2025, at 79. She was cremated on Oct. 14.
