(WJW) – Acting icon Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88.

That news came from Variety, who confirmed his death through his agency CAA.

It was confirmed a short time later through his famous actor son, Kiefer Sutherland.

“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived,” Kiefer wrote on social media.

Sutherland had a film in pre-production called “Heart Land,” according to IMDB.

He also made films including “The Dirty Dozen,” “M*A*S*H,” “Klute,” and more recently he appeared in “The Hunger Games” franchise.

His first acting credit, according to IMDB, is from 1962.

He won an Emmy for supporting actor for HBO’s “Citizen X” in 1995.

In addition to Kiefer, he is survived by four other children.
