Donald Trump has launched an attack on President Joe Biden after the pair agreed to face off in two live televised debates.

In a post on Truth Social, written in capital letters, Trump said: “CROOKED JOE BIDEN IS THE WEAKEST, MOST INCOMPETENT, AND MOST DISHONEST PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES BUT, MOST IMPORTANTLY, HE IS THE WORST PRESIDENT OUR COUNTRY HAS EVER SEEN OR KNOWN. HOPEFULLY, THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER ONE LIKE HIM. HE IS A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY!”

The post arrived after Trump and Biden agreed to take part in two 2024 presidential election debates in June and September, which will be hosted by CNN and ABC respectively.

The Context

Trump and Biden will compete against each other again in November’s general election.
The two live televised debates could set up some of the most high stakes moments of the 2024 election campaign, with tens of millions expected to watch across the country.

Ahead of the confirmation of the two debates, Trump was goading Biden into accepting the challenge to face him one to one, including calling the president “the worst debater” he has ever faced.

Biden suggested that Trump “lost two debates to me in 2020” and has not “shown up for a debate” since then, a reference to Trump skipping the all four Republican primary debates.

“Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal,” Biden said in a video posted to social media.

What We Know

Both the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates agreed on a time and a place to hold the live presidential debates on Wednesday, the first one being set for June 27 on CNN in Atlanta and the second scheduled for September 10 on ABC.

The Trump campaign has also pushed for more debates, with Trump previously posting on social media that he has accepted an offer for one to be held by Fox News on October 2.

In response, Biden’s 2024 team rejected calls for more debates, accusing the former president of “playing games.”

“No more games. No more chaos, no more debate about debates,” Biden campaign Chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a statement. “We’ll see Donald Trump on June 27th in Atlanta—if he shows up.”

The first debate will be held at CNN’s Atlanta studios, with the network’s anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash serving as moderators. The debate will not be in front of a live audience in order to “maximize the time allotted” for each candidate.

Elsewhere, Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claimed that he has met the criteria to participate in the CNN debate. The networks require that each candidate has qualified for enough state ballots to reach the 270 electoral vote threshold, and to have and received at least 15 percent support in four separate national polls of registered or likely voters.

“I look forward to holding Presidents Biden and Trump accountable for their records in Atlanta on June 27 to give Americans the debate they deserve,” Kennedy Jr. posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Trump, in a video posted on Truth Social, said: “Joe Biden is the worst president in the history of the United States, and it’s not even close. All of these ridiculous trials that are going on right now having to do with your president, it’s a witch hunt the likes of which this country has never seen before.

“Its election interference, and the people of our country are not standing for it.”

Biden wrote on X: “I’ve also received and accepted an invitation to a debate hosted by ABC on Tuesday, September 10th.

“Trump says he’ll arrange his own transportation. I’ll bring my plane, too. I plan on keeping it for another four years.”

What’s Next

Details on how the debates will operate are still to be ironed out.

Biden is hoping to enforce strict rules to reduce interruptions, while Trump is calling for at least one to be held in a large venue “for excitement purposes.”
