The Eagles lost a major defensive chess piece in an offseason injury.
Outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard has been placed on the physically unable to perform list after suffering a pec strain while working out before training camp.
The team doesn’t expect it to be a long-term issue.
“One of the things we know about Greenard is he’s going to be ready to play,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said Wednesday, per ESPN.
“Training camp is so important, practice is so important, but when you have a guy that prepares the way he does, who has the experience in the NFL the way he does, you know he’s going to be ready to play when we start the season.”
The Eagles landed Greenard in a trade with the Vikings during the 2026 NFL Draft in April, and agreed to a four-year, $98 million extension that includes $50 million in guaranteed money.
Philadelphia gave up the No. 98 selection in 2026 and a third round pick in 2027 for the linebacker in hopes he could replace Jaelan Phillips.
Phillips signed a 4-year, $120 million contract with Carolina, after joining the Eagles in a trade mid-season in 2025. He finished the year with five sacks, two with Philadelphia.
Greenard was expected to lead a linebacker room that included Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith Jr. and AJ Epenesa.
He spent the first four years of his career with the Texans after they selected him No. 90 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.
After his rookie contract ended in 2024, Greenard signed a four-year, $72 million deal with the Vikings, making a Pro Bowl in his first season with the team.
In 2025 his numbers dropped significantly, posting just 38 tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble in 12 games, but a shoulder injury that resulted in a season-ending surgery was likely to blame.
