EL PASO, Texas (KVIA)– Today El Paso Health will present a check to the El Pasoans fighting Hunger food Bank to help with their Food FARMacy. The FARMacy works with physicians and dietitians to educate patients on the importance for having a healthy balanced diet.
Carol Smallwood, the CEO of El Paso health, says food is medicine and some people don’t know how food impacts their conditions.
“When you look at food packaging today, you think that everything is healthy because some of the marketing on the outside of the packages, you to think that it’s healthy food. But when you really read those nutrition labels, you can see incredible amounts of sugar or sodium. So if you have hypertension and you’re eating a frozen dinner, that is so high in sodium but you think you’re eating healthy because it says healthy on the packages,” Smallwood said.
Food Containing high levels of sugar, salt and fats can wreak havoc on one’s body. El Pasoans fighting Hunger spokesperson says they currently serve about 300 patients a month and they are looking to expand their network with physicians to serve more patients.
Susan Goodell, the CEO of El Pasoans Fighting Hunger says This partnership underscores the vital connection between nutritious food and health, enabling EPFH to provide essential education to those managing chronic conditions.
“We are incredibly grateful to El Paso Health for this check for $30,000, the food Farmacy is a relatively new program for the food bank, and it’s seed money like this that is absolutely critical to making sure that we’re able to keep this program open,” Goodell said.
