Awards show season is about to be in full swing, which means award nominations are in the news.
“Wicked,” one of the biggest movies of the year, has been nominated for several notable awards already, but it received significantly more nominations for the Critics Choice awards than it did for the Golden Globes.
-
On Monday, the Golden Globe nominations were released, and “Wicked” received four nominations.
-
Later in the week on Thursday, the Critics Choice awards nominations were released, with “Wicked” receiving 11.
“Wicked” tied with “Conclave” for the most Critics Choice awards nominations this year, per Variety.
The main question here is, how did “Wicked” receive so many more Critics Choice Awards nominations than Golden Globes?

‘Wicked’ and the Golden Globes
“Emilia Perez” received the most Golden Globe nominations, with 10 across acting, directing, writing and music categories.
There were multiple other movies that got more nominations than “Wicked” — “The Brutalist” received six nominations and “Anora” and “The Substance” both received five.
“Wicked” did not get nominated for any writing, directing or music awards.
The movie’s soundtrack is not eligible for the awards because it only used songs from the musical, per The Hollywood Reporter. In other words, there were no original songs written for the movie.
According to Deadline and Variety, the biggest snub for “Wicked” was John M. Chu not being nominated for best director.
“You gave well-deserved nominations to the film itself and its fabulous stars, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, but left out the true wizard of all things ‘Wicked?’” Deadline’s Dominic Patten wrote.
According to Variety, Chu wasn’t the only director who was snubbed of a Golden Globe nomination: “Dune: Part Two” director Denis Villeneuve also didn’t receive a best director nomination.
‘Wicked’ and the Critics Choice Awards
The simplest answer to the question of why “Wicked” received more Critics Choice award nominations than Golden Globes nominations is that the Critics Choice Awards features more categories, so there was more opportunity for nominations.
There are 21 movie categories for the Critics Choice awards, while the Golden Globes have just 15 categories for movies.
The Golden Globes categories are also divided into different genres so not all movies qualify for every category. The Critics Choice categories are more general, creating more opportunities for nominations for every movie.
And while the Golden Globes only has awards for acting, directing, writing and music, the Critics Choice Awards also has categories in cinematography, costume design, visual effects, hair and makeup, and other aspects of filmmaking.
The Critics Choice awards also gave nominations to “Wicked” for writing and directing, both categories the film was left out of for the Golden Globes.
