CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is keeping the door open for a possible 2028 presidential run, he told the media Tuesday.
When asked about his political future, Gov. Beshear said a presidential campaign is “something we’ll consider” after he sits down with his family.
“What’s most important is that we have a candidate that can heal the country,” he said in part.
“And so, if we think that might be me, it’s something we’ll consider. But if that is another candidate, I care much more about this country than I ever will about a title for myself.”
Although Beshear has previously hinted at presidential ambitions, he says his next political endeavor is to become the head of the Democratic Governor’s Association, a political organization that supports Democratic governors and candidates by fundraising and campaigning.
The governor’s term ends in December 2027.
‘Getting things done’
The two-term Democratic governor of a deeply red state has won the approval of some Republican voters over the years, including those in Eastern Kentucky counties, such as Knott, Letcher and Perry.
For Beshear, he says it is not about being a Democrat or Republican — it’s about “getting things done.”
On Tuesday, Beshear sat down with Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and former U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) at the “Across the River and Across the Aisle” discussion.

The two governors, moderated by Portman, talked about the importance of bipartisanship in a politically polarizing world.
“Right now I’m trying to be a reasonable voice into the chaos. I’m trying to make sure that we can bring people together, focusing on common sense, common ground and getting things done,” Beshear continued in response to rumors about his presidential run.
Where did the rumors come from?
In the 2024 Presidential Election, rumors circulated that Beshear was on a list of potential candidates to be Kamala Harris’s running mate.
Since then, his name has been mentioned in national headlines as the Democratic Party’s possible next 2028 presidential candidate.
The governor has also been making his rounds across the nation.
He spoke at Iowa’s Liberty and Justice Celebration in 2024, and more recently, he visited New Hampshire to meet with local Democrats about the party’s future.
These trips do not even include his face time on FOX News, CNN and MSNBC, or his in-depth interviews with NPR and Vogue.
