England star Harry Kane is known as a world-class footballer, but he could give that a bit of additional meaning if his words about his future end up being true.
Kane, who starred for England at the World Cup over the summer and is back with the national team during the current extended international window, told reporters on Wednesday that he would “look at a bit more seriously” trying his hand at being a kicker in the NFL.
“It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let’s put it that way,” Kane, a noted golf enthusiast, told reporters, according to The Athletic.
The Bayern Munich striker openly talked about playing in the MLS down the line and combining his career by playing in the U.S. top domestic soccer league and in the NFL. “Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two maybe with the seasons,” he said, per the Associated Press.
In the 31-year history of MLS, there has never been a player in the league who has also played in the NFL, but the NFL has seen several dual-sport athletes in its midst, including Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson, both of whom played in the NFL and Major League Baseball.
The prospect of a soccer player also kicking for a football team isn’t that uncommon in high school and college athletics, and Brandon Aubrey made headlines by becoming the Cowboys’ kicker after being a professional soccer player in his early 20s.
At the age of 33, Kane acknowledged that he is still a ways away from seriously considering a move to the United States, but it marked the first time the England star had publicly expressed a possibility of playing in MLS.
“But it is in the back of my mind because right now, I am feeling that I want to play as long as I can here,” he said.
The England captain told reporters that he was “fairly close” to finalising a new deal with Bayern Munich.
Kane has three goals and an assist in three starts for the Bundesliga club this season.
