Hayden Panettiere was found unresponsive from an apparent overdose before her death.

Authorities in South Carolina confirmed on Monday, August 17, that they responded to reports of an “unresponsive female” at a residence, who was later identified as Panettiere.

According to TMZ, first responders attempted to resuscitate Panettiere using “advanced cardiac life support.” In addition to CPR, the tactics included special medicines, breathing tubes and heart rhythm tracking. Panettiere was reportedly pronounced dead after the paramedics’ efforts were unable to revive her.

In dispatch audio obtained by People, officials were heard discussing an “overdose” and “cardiac arrest” around the time of Panettiere’s death.

News broke of Panettiere’s death on Sunday, August 16.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” read a statement from her father, Skip Panettiere. “We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”

Police confirmed an investigation is underway, noting, “The case is under investigation by the Greenville Police Department in conjunction with the Greenville County Coroner’s Office. The preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. An acquaintance of Ms. Panettiere placed the 911 call.”

Panettiere, who made her acting debut as a child and was known for her roles on Heroes, Nashville and more, faced ups and downs in the public eye. She took a hiatus from acting in 2018 while struggling with postpartum depression and alcohol and opioid addiction.

More recently, Panettiere reflected on the challenges she faced in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.

“Going through challenges is daunting enough in the spotlight where everyone feels entitled to the details of your life, but those challenges I’ve faced have made me stronger,” Panettiere told Us about her book earlier this year. “Every moment of our life and every person we meet along the way is a lesson.”

Panettiere was also focused on raising daughter Kaya, whom she welcomed in December 2014 with ex Wladimir Klitschko.

“Though my circumstances may be different, the obstacles I’ve faced are no different than what many others face daily,” she concluded. “Our world could use more empathy and compassion, and I hope that my book ignites that in others — while also entertaining them, of course.”
