You can almost smell the Swedish meatballs and lingonberry jam all the way in Rochester already. That’s right, IKEA is coming to upstate New York.
IKEA U.S. announced plans for its third New York location at Destiny USA in Syracuse on the company’s website on July 7.
“We are thrilled to offer Syracuse metro area residents more ways to shop and experience IKEA,” says IKEA U.S. CEO and chief sustainability officer Javier Quiñones. “The opening of IKEA Syracuse highlights our commitment to bring IKEA closer to the many people and make it easier and more affordable to access our home furnishing products and solutions.”
Here’s what to know.
What to expect inside Syracuse’s IKEA location
IKEA U.S. announced plans for its third New York location at Destiny USA in Syracuse on the company’s website on July 7.
The almost 70,000 sq-ft. space will feature various fully-furnished room settings so you can get a better idea of how some of their offerings may work in your home, a curated selection of over 3,000 products immediately available for purchase and a central planning area where IKEA team members can help you design and order items for your home.
While larger items like couches and beds will be need to be ordered online, you’ll have the option for home delivery or free in-store pickup. There will also be an As-Is department filled with gently used products, discontinued items and more affordable furnishings, the company said.
And, of course, they’ll be offering fan-favorite foods like Swedish meatballs, hot dogs and cinnamon rolls in-store and to take home.
When will IKEA Syracuse open?
While an exact date hasn’t been announced yet, the company’s news release states the Syracuse store will open in fall 2025.
Where are the other IKEA locations in New York?
There are currently two IKEA stores in New York state. Here’s where they’re located:
-
Brooklyn: 1 Beard St. in Brooklyn
-
Long Island: 1100 Broadway Mall in Hicksville
Destiny USA owner’s recent financial struggles
The announcement comes at a tumultuous time for the current owners of the Central New York mall.
According to Syracuse.com, Pyramid Management Group, Destiny USA’s owner, has lost two of its malls in the last year — Hampshire Mall in Massachusetts and Palisades Center in West Nyack — and a foreclosure action has been started by Wells Fargo Bank on the Walden Galleria near Buffalo.
The shopping mall developer is also facing a possible foreclosure on Destiny USA as Pyramid defaulted on the mall’s $300 million mortgage in June 2024, Syracuse.com says.
