One of New Jersey’s most iconic delis is opening its first Somerset County location next month.

The Millburn Deli will open in the Village at Bridgewater Commons at the former home of Banana Republic and across from Cava in mid-May.

The Millburn Deli, which has locations in Millburn, Morristown, Montclair and Westfield, first opened in 1947.

It’s known for sandwiches like The Gobbler, a Jersey take on a Sloppy Joe, and The Godfadda with a chicken cutlet, bacon and mozzarella.

Those sandwiches and the others on the menu will be the same in Bridgewater as they are at the other delis. All of the locations are corporate-owned, rather than franchised, and all products come from the same places.

What will be different at Bridgewater Commons is that it will feature Millburn Deli’s new interior design and logo. The design will be rolled out at the other locations in the next few months.

The 2,233-square-foot deli with a dozen seats will have bright burgundy and navy colors, a digital menu, rustic red chairs, wood benches, penny round tile floors, a countertop window with seating, and a white tile wall showcasing Chip the pickle, the Millburn Deli’s new mascot (the deli serves a pickle with every sandwich).

“The look will be more modern and updated so as we grow, you’ll know you’re in a Millburn Deli,” said Rich Nemet, who co-owns the deli alongside Andrew and Diana Morgan.

Opening in Somerset County is a natural evolution for the Millburn Deli, said Nemet, and he hopes to open delis throughout the East Coast.

“I’ve been a customer for 25 years and as a fan of our food, I want to bring it to as many people as possible,” he said. “There aren’t many sandwich options in the Bridgewater area and be amongst Cava, Shake Shack and Chipotle, it’s a good food destination with lots of business and corporations nearby.”
