Palm Beach’s hot spot for cool treats, the iconic Sprinkles Ice Cream shop is souping up its menu.
Just passing the one-year mark under new ownership, Sprinkles will still offer over 32 flavors of ice cream, sorbet and sherbet. But this longtime focal point for frozen refreshment has expanded its menu to also feature soups and sandwiches. More food options are expected ahead.
The restaurant’s owner Anson Ainsworth, who purchased the beloved shop with his wife Cortney in June 2023, said that from the start they had changes planned from the start.
“When we first bought the place we had a vision of how we wanted to do things,” Ainsworth said. But first they had to iron out a few kinks. He said chief among them: “The freezers weren’t working.” Pretty essential in running an ice cream shop, they replaced those and quickly got everything else up to speed.
Though Ainsworth is originally from Houston and moved to the area in 2015, he said he and his wife knew about Sprinkles and its place in the community. “Sprinkles has a rich history and is an icon on the island. It takes a personal touch to give it the kind of magic people expect.”
The menu expansion has been gradual.
“We didn’t want to bring out something that wasn’t worthy of Palm Beach,” he said. “The first step was expanding to boba teas, smoothies and Italian sodas.” They were added in September.
Once those items were on the menu, the couple began to consider the food and eventually hired chef Michele Conry. At the time, the Brooklyn native was teaching classes at Sur La Table. Ainsworth said “We went and watched one of her classes and were impressed.”
Ainsworth said Conry creates “elevated comfort food with a twist.” She’s able to generate incredible flavors with her ingredient combinations, he said.
Though still in what he described as their “soft opening phase” for food, they began serving soups and sandwiches Dec. 12.
The menu will feature four soups at a time made in-house from scratch. Two of those soups, tomato bisque, and chicken and rice, will be full-time staples. Two others will rotate monthly. The soup rotation currently includes butternut squash and green apple, and a white bean and kale that is vegan friendly. They are available by the cup, pint, quart and gallon.
Sprinkles’ current sandwich menu includes smoked turkey with smoked gouda, aioli and arugula with a drizzle of hot honey; a tavern ham with spiced apple compote, Havarti and aioli; a classic Italian featuring ham, salami, hot cappy, romaine lettuce and pepperoncini peppers; house made chicken salad; and a classic BLT with aioli.
The sandwiches will be available on either a hoagie roll, Italian loaf or a Kaiser roll all supplied by Doris Italian Market & Bakery.
Ainsworth said this is only the second phase in their menu upgrade and said the plan is to eventually add wraps and salads and even a few dinner specials like meatloaf.
