Calm down, California. Your favorite burgers aren’t going N-ywhere.
California-based burger empire In-N-Out Burger is setting the record straight on wild rumors that the chain is planning to close all of its California locations amid its eastward expansion.
In an interview marking the chain’s 78th anniversary, In-N-Out owner and president Lynsi Synder told Terry Crews that the business has no plans to leave the golden state, despite her family’s move to Tennessee.
“This is where we started, where we are and where we will always be,” said Snyder, the granddaughter of In-N-Out founders Harry and Esther Snyder. The fast food heiress said she heard rumors that In-N-Out is planning to leave California, which she says would be “the dumbest business decision ever.”
But that doesn’t mean the chain isn’t making big changes. In-N-Out is currently preparing to open an “eastern headquarters” in Tennessee, where the chain currently operates five locations.
Synder teased the chain’s expansion to other states.
“We continue to grow in California and we have lots of stores slotted for future cities in California. I’m also excited to go to other states. There’s definitely some earmarked,” said Snyder.
The burger boss said that expanding to other states creates the opportunity for employees to relocate and help set up new locations, with the possibility of transfering.
“We have our California people who are going to be here, and that’s obviously the majority … and we have a great team that’s going out there. And there’s a little more opportunity for people to buy houses out there,” said Snyder.
Founded in Baldwin Park in 1948, In-N-Out currently has 445 restaurants in 10 states, including 289 locations in California. The chain’s most recent opening was a new store in Stockton.
Though the chain is headquartered in Irvine, they announced plans to relocate their headquarters back to Baldwin Park by the end of 2029.
Plans for several other In-N-Out’s across California are underway, including locations in Palm Springs, Chino, Commerce, and South El Monte.
Despite the chain’s immense popularity, which has sparked an underground network of unauthorized deliveries, In-N-Out’s locations are largely concentrated on the West Coast, making it a popular destination for California tourists.
