Brad Sherman officially announced his candidacy for governor in February; others contemplate run.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The 2026 General Election is set for Nov. 3. While many political leaders have indicated interest in running for governor, after Gov. Kim Reynolds announced she would not seek reelection, very few have made definitive announcements.

Former Republican state representative Brad Sherman announced his candidacy in February. In contrast, U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks quickly stated she would not run for governor. Other Republicans have shared they are considering throwing their name in that hat.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig says right now he is focusing on doing the job he was elected saying in part quote:

“…Several folks have reached out in recent days and encouraged me to consider a run for governor. My family and I are thoughtfully discussing that possibility and keeping all options on the table… Regardless of this decision, I intend to be on the ballot in 2026.”

Democratic Rep. Zach Wahls is also rumored to be considering running for governor. When asked, Wahls sent a statement saying in part:

“I am seriously considering a run but focused on finishing our work in the state legislature, and my wife Chloe and I hope to have a final decision shortly after the session concludes.”

House Speaker Pat Grassley is also said to be interested in the state’s highest seat. When asked, he shared with Local 5 a statement saying in part:

“… As for my political future, I’m not ruling anything out. My focus right now remains on the last few weeks of session with the house republican caucus and delivering on the promises we’ve made to Iowans…”

Attorney General Brenna Bird is also a possible candidate. Local 5 reached out to her team asking if Bird is preparing to run but has not heard back yet.

During caucus season Pres. Donald Trump said he sees a future where Bird is Iowa’s next governor.

“She stepped up she’s going to be your governor someday I predict, so we’ll see,” Trump said.

State Auditor Rob Sand and Rep. Josh Turke are other names being thrown around from the Democratic Party. We reached out to both of their teams and have not gotten a response.

There is still a lot of time for others to step forward we will continue to update you when those announcements pour in.
