Vice President Kamala Harris could well be planning a post-inauguration relocation to Manhattan. Her husband, Doug Emhoff, was seen touring a luxury $20,000-a-month apartment on New York’s Upper West Side, sparking speculation that the couple will trade the White House for the Big Apple.

Harris, 60, who lost the 2024 presidential election to Republican candidate Donald Trump, will end her four-year run as vice president on Jan. 20, when J.D. Vance will take over the role.

While serving as President Joe Biden‘s VP, Harris and her husband lived rent-free in a property on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory, which has long been used as the official residence of the vice president and their families. Before moving into the property, Harris hired designer Sheila Bridges to renovate its interiors, adding several bold touches, including some bright pink wallpaper in the library.

While those updates were carried out, Harris and Emhoff used the official presidential guesthouse, known as Blair House, as their Washington, D.C., homebase.

However, the couple do not actually own their own property in the city, having sold off a condo they previously owned back in 2021.

Indeed, the only property currently in their real estate portfolio is a large home in Brentwood, CA, which Emhoff purchased for $2.7 million back in 2012, before he and Harris tied the knot in 2014.

Initially, it was suggested that the pair might relocate to the West Coast after Trump’s inauguration—but it now appears they may be aiming to add an East Coast residence, albeit a temporary one.

According to Page Six, Emhoff was seen touring a $20,000-a-month, three-bedroom apartment inside the ultralavish Park Loggia condo building not long before the inauguration ceremony is due to take place, with sources telling the outlet that the second gentleman visited the property without his wife, instead arriving with a “convoy of SUVs and a phalanx of Secret Service.”

A second insider claimed that Harris and Emhoff are “looking to be bicoastal,” suggesting they will split their time between their California home and a potential rental in Manhattan.

There are currently multiple units available to rent inside the luxury building, including a three-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom dwelling that is listed for $18,500 per month. However, other units in the building have previously been rented out for as much as $25,000 per month, with one apartment on the 26th floor leased for $19,950 a month back in 2022.

It is not currently known exactly which unit Emhoff toured inside the property, which offers its residents a wealth of amenities, beginning—per the building’s website—with a “white-glove greeter” at the front entrance. Additional perks include a spacious communal rooftop area with Central Park views, a fitness center and yoga studio, a game room, a conference room, a private dining room, and a golf simulator.

The couple may well be further inclined to secure a property on the East Coast after the area surrounding their Brentwood residence sustained major damage during the California wildfires.

Although it’s understood that the house itself has remained intact, Brentwood was placed under an evacuation order as one of several deadly blazes tore through the community. Harris’s spokesperson confirmed that there was nobody in the property at the time—however, People reports that two men were detained by police near the abode after they were spotted in the evacuation zone.

The authorities later confirmed that they found no evidence of a crime, with one source saying: “They likely had no idea where they were.”

As for Harris, it is currently unclear what her plans are for her post-White House career, with sources telling the New York Times in November that she had no “concrete” aims.

“Her friends, aides, and political allies have said in the hours since her loss to former President Donald J. Trump that it is too soon to even contemplate, let alone plan, the next phase of her life, except to say that the 60-year-old Ms. Harris will have plenty of options,” the publication stated.

Soon after her election loss, Harris and her husband traveled to Hawaii, where they holed up in a luxury vacation home for six days, during which she was reported to have been plotting her next political moves, according to Politico.

The outlet stated that those options include a 2028 run at the White House, as well as a 2026 bid for governor of California, her home state.

“She doesn’t have to decide if she wants to run for something again in the next six months,” a former Harris aide told the outlet. “The natural thing to do would be to set up some type of entity that would give her the opportunity to travel and give speeches and preserve her political relationships.”
