ROANOKE CO., Va. (WDBJ) – Roanoke County is honoring the service of the late Salem Naval Air Crewman by dedicating the Diguids Lane Bridge in his memory.

James P. Buriak, known as Jimmy, is described by his family and friends as gracious and selfless. He passed away on August 31st, 2021.

“He was the kindest, most caring, compassionate, enthusiastic person about life that I’ve ever gotten to know and share my life with,” said his wife, Megan Buriak. “So we’re grateful to have had him for as long as we did, but we miss him every day.”

Jimmy was born in Salem and graduated from Roanoke College in 2012. Inspired by his love for our country, he joined the US Navy in 2017.

“I remember when Jimmy joined the Navy and told me, ‘I’m gonna be a SEAL,’ with great pride and excitement,” said his childhood best friend, Patrick Pollifrone.

During a routine Navy flight operation, the helicopter crashed four years after he enlisted. Jimmy was one of five sailors killed in the accident.

“Jimmy loved our country…He wanted to make a difference in this life and in this world, and he wanted to help and save people, which is why he joined the United States Navy,” explained Megan.

His ultimate sacrifice for the country will forever be remembered at the newly dedicated James P. Buriak Memorial Bridge.

“Jimmy was definitely the epitome of service for others,” said VA Delegate (R) Joe McNamara. “So, I think it’s very fitting that we remember him and remind ourselves over and over again of his sacrifice and what he accomplished in his life here.”

His parents, wife, son, friends, and community members were present at the ceremony on Monday.

“The naming of this bridge is just a wonderful thing for our family, and may his memory be eternal,” said his father, James Buriak.

When you cross the bridge, remember the story behind Buriak’s name.

“We’re extremely grateful to have a spot where people can drive over and read his name and look up his story,” added Megan.

The James Buriak Foundation is hosting a run in October, with proceeds helping other military families who have lost loved ones. For more information, click here.
