Kai Trump begins her collegiate golf career on a troubling note after sustaining a wrist injury during her first tournament.
The 19-year-old injured her wrist at the Golfweek Fall Challenge earlier this month. The injury occurred early in the competition when she attempted a swing near a path and unknowingly struck hidden concrete beneath the surface.
The University of Miami golfer is the daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and his ex-wife Vanessa Trump and granddaughter of President Donald Trump offered insight into the setback in an emotional Instagram video.
“Let’s just say there must have been some cart path underneath that ground because it was very hard. Hit it, it felt like a shock on my arm,” Trump said
The injury got worse later on a swing with her driver.
“Then on the tenth hole, I hit my driver, and I felt like I tore it again,” she said.
Tests revealed the injury wasn’t as severe. Doctors found a “little sliver” of damage along her ligaments.
In an effort not to miss extended time, Kia Trump says she is receiving stem cell injections from Dr. Jeffrey Weigers, a pain management specialist.
The injury affected her play during her time at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, as Trump finished tied for 102nd in a 120-player competition with a 10-over 81.
The injury comes at a rough time for Trump as she’s in a transitional period of her life, moving away from family and friends in Jupiter, Florida, as she moves into college.
In recent videos posted to her YouTube channel, Trump is devastated by homesickness and sobbing on camera.
“I’m not a very emotional person at all, so this is like really weird for me to cry, I’ve only cried a few times. I think knowing that I have to say goodbye to everyone tonight really, really sucks,” Trump said.
Now Trump has some time to recover and get her mind right before heading to North Carolina as Miami heads to the Ruth Chris Tar Heel Invitational on UNC Finley Golf Course.
