JUPITER, Fla. – The Mets’ highest-profile pitching acquisition this offseason will get the ball on Opening Day.
Freddy Peralta, who was set for his Mets debut Friday in an exhibition game, is lined up to pitch the team’s season opener on March 26 at Citi Field, according to manager Carlos Mendoza.
“As soon as we acquired him it was clear he was going to be pitching at the front of our rotation,” Mendoza said. “He earned it. He’s done it and we are all excited.”
The Mets landed Peralta, along with Tobias Myers, in a January trade that sent Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams to the Brewers.
Paul Skenes, the reigning National League Cy Young award winner, is expected to be Peralta’s mound opponent for the Pirates in the season opener.
