LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Michigan voters turned out in historic numbers for the 2024 presidential election, according to a new report released by the Michigan Department of State (MDOS).
Michigan broke its previous 2020 record by 5.7 million votes and was ranked third in the nation, with around 74 percent of eligible voters casting a ballot.
More than 1.2 million Michiganders voted in person on Election Day, while over 2.2 million cast their ballots by mail.
This was the first statewide general election held since the passage of Proposal 2022-2, which expanded voter access by requiring a minimum of nine days of early in-person voting, establishing a permanent mail-in ballot list, and mandating ballot drop boxes in every jurisdiction.
As of December 5, 2024, more than 25 percent of active registered voters had signed up for the state’s permanent vote-by-mail list.
Over 820,000 voters were first-time voters in Michigan, accounting for 14.5 percent of the total turnout.
“As American citizens, our vote is our voice. Now, more than ever, Michiganders are making their voices heard,” said Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
