Speaker of the House Mike Johnson’s fate hangs in the balance as Republicans prepare to vote Friday on whether he will lead them in the 119th Congress.
Several GOP members remain undecided — and Johnson, 52, can only afford to lose one vote from his conference before his path to the speaker’s gavel is barred.
“I think we get it done on the first round, I’m certainly hopeful for that, because, as we noted, we got to stick together,” he predicted Thursday on Fox Business.
House Democrats are not expected to bail Johnson out if he faces a rebellion from his own party, which has forced Louisiana Republican to lean on a recent endorsement from President-elect Donald Trump in an effort to shore up support.
“He’s the one that can win,” Trump said Monday in a Truth Social post.
