The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives stars Mayci Neeley and Mikayla Matthews are entering the chat after Demi Engemann’s singing with husband Bret Engemann went viral.
In an Instagram video uploaded on Sunday, March 29, Mikayla, 26, reacted to a fan who commented, “Can y’all sing true colors?” Mikayla wrote in text over the video, “99 percent accuracy.”
“True Colors are beautiful,” Mikayla sang, while Mayci, 31, joined in. “Like a rainbow.”
Mayci began laughing as the video came to an end. Mikayla captioned the post, “Sorry Mayci was a little breathy 👀😬.”
In season 4 of Mormon Wives, Demi and Bret were filmed heading to a recording studio to sing “True Colors.” The interaction made the rounds online primarily, due to Demi’s critique of Bret’s singing. Demi and Bret, however, were not heavily featured in season 4 of the Hulu show.
“I might come and go, but there are people that stay that want to go that don’t have the balls to go,” Demi quipped to TMZ in an interview published on March 13, without naming names. “I will always be the girl that walks away for my peace [and] mental health. Like, it’s my opportunity too, so I can do what I want.”
She added, “I don’t regret anything, and I’ll stand by my decision to come and go as I need to.”
One day prior to the remark, Demi’s former BFF Jessi Draper told E! News that “it wasn’t super surprising” to see her leave the show.
“Running off makes you look worse, in my opinion,” Jessi, 33, told the outlet on March 12. “I wasn’t surprised, because she does this a lot.”
As for whether Demi sees a future with Mormon Wives, she teased that her decision will depend on how she feels “moment to moment.”
“[It will be] based on what feels right to me, and where my mental health’s at and what’s best for my family,” she told TMZ, sharing that she has “so many fun things coming” in the interim. “I’m so excited, it’s something new, [but] I can’t say anything.”
Days after her interview, multiple outlets reported that season 5 of Mormon Wives halted production after Taylor Frankie Paul and ex Dakota Mortensen were involved in an alleged domestic violence dispute weeks prior in Utah. A spokesperson for the Draper City Police Department confirmed to Us Weekly that there is an open “domestic assault investigation” with the pair, noting that “allegations have been made in both directions.”
After news broke about Taylor and Dakota’s police investigation, their Mormon Wives costars reportedly met with Hulu and Disney executives to talk about a potential break from filming.
“It’s a dangerous situation, it’s a sad situation, and we don’t know how to navigate it because Taylor is our friend,” one cast member said during the call, NBC News reported, citing audio from the meeting.
Mikayla, for her part, confirmed MomTok’s decision to halt filming. “It was a decision that all of us girls came up with and agreed on,” she wrote via her Instagram Story. “We didn’t feel comfortable filming with everything that was happening.”
