Incoming Trump administration officials entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are meeting Thursday with congressional Republicans to discuss the mission of their nascent Department of Government Efficiency and how they can work together to cut government waste.
Republican lawmakers in the GOP-controlled Congress appear eager to dovetail with the new Trump administration’s plan, with the House having creating for the next Congress the Delivering on Government Efficiency, DOGE, subcommittee, which will be led by Trump loyalist Republican Georgia Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene, and in forming the bicameral DOGE Caucus, whose chairwoman is Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa.
However, what authority the administration’s new agency has toward cutting government spending and how it will work with Congress toward that goal in that capacity is unclear.
Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, met with incoming Senate Majority Leader Sen. John Thune, R-S.D.
Musk and Ramswamy, a former 2024 GOP presidential candidate, reportedly attended the first meeting of the new DOGE Caucus, which now has a Democratic member.
The meeting organized by House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., with Musk and Ramswamy is underway on Capitol Hill.
