A new bank of Tesla charging stations will be going up at WinCo Foods, the 24/7 discount supermarket chain at 1050 Old Alturas Road in Redding.
Construction work starts Monday and will take place over the next two weeks, between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. and finish on March 21, according to an email from Redding Engineering Division Construction Manager Kyle Jones.
While construction is going on, portions of Friendly Road and Browning Road may be subject to traffic control, he said.
Redding officials weren’t available Friday afternoon to say how many EV charging bays would be installed.
Those new charging stations will join others in the region.
While other groups have installed charging stations around the city, eight EV charging bays in the Sundial Bridge and Turtle Bay Exploration Park in 2021 became the first that Redding Electric Utility has installed for public use. The area is popular with locals and tourists.
“You should be able to plug it in and go to Turtle Bay and when you come back, it’s fully charged, like within a 30-minute time frame,” said Nick Visconti, assistant engineer with Redding’s Public Works Department at that time.

The $568,435 cost of that project came from REU’s share of greenhouse gas emission allowances, under California’s cap-and-trade program to reduce pollution.
In 2020, REU installed electric vehicle power stations near City Hall. They’re exclusively used to charge Redding’s expanding electric vehicle fleet.
