Annette Addo-Yobo was crowned Miss Texas on Saturday night, making her the first ever immigrant-born and Ghanaian woman to win the title.
“I am humbled, honored, and grateful to serve as your 87th Miss Texas!” Addo-Yobo wrote on the Miss Texas Instagram account.
Addo-Yobo, who entered the competition as Miss Southlake, competed from June 25 to June 29. For the preliminary talent section of the competition, Addo-Yobo spoke about autism awareness and her brother, who has autism. Her platform, The SPARK Project, focuses on autism safety and education, according to a social media post.
“This crown is for every young child, teenager, and adult on the spectrum who felt alienated, abandoned, stereotyped, and unseen because of their different abilities,” Addo-Yobo wrote on a personal social media account. This crown is for “young immigrant girls who had to live a life different from everyone else because they were caregivers before they were students, friends, or teammates. This crown is for those who dare to be different.”
Addo-Yobo lived in both Canada and the United States after her family emigrated when she was almost 2 years old, she wrote on social media. She graduated from University of Texas at Dallas in 2020 with a degree in psychology. In 2022, she became a U.S. citizen.
Addo-Yobo will compete as Miss Texas in the next Miss America competition.
