The New York Times editorial board has made its endorsement in the 2024 presidential race.
In an opinion piece published Monday, the editorial board wrote that Vice President Harris is the clear choice for the White House while ripping former President Trump for not “being fit” for another term. The New York Times editorial board has endorsed the Democrat candidate in presidential elections since 1960.
The editorial board wrote that it “is hard to imagine a candidate more unworthy to serve as president of the United States than Donald Trump,” adding that he has “proved himself morally unfit for an office that asks its occupant to put the good of the nation above self-interest.”
“This unequivocal, dispiriting truth — Donald Trump is not fit to be president — should be enough for any voter who cares about the health of our country and the stability of our democracy to deny him re-election,” the editorial board wrote.
“For this reason, regardless of any political disagreements voters might have with her, Kamala Harris is the only patriotic choice for president,” the board continued.
The board praised Harris as a “dedicated public servant who has demonstrated care, competence and an unwavering commitment to the Constitution.” It also noted that while she may “not be the perfect candidate” for everyone, her record is better than Trump’s.
The board touted her policies on the economy, saying she would “help Americans better afford the things they need, to make it easier to own a home, to support small businesses and to help workers.”
The board also noted that Trump’s rhetoric, his numerous criminal charges and his conviction in the hush money case has made him unfit for the presidency. They also pointed to the dozens of Republicans who have announced their intent to vote for Harris instead of Trump in November.
“The Republicans who support Ms. Harris recognize that this election is about something more fundamental than narrow partisan interest. It is about principles that go beyond party,” the board wrote.
“In 2020 this board made the strongest case it could against the re-election of Mr. Trump. Four years later, many Americans have put his excesses out of their minds. We urge them and those who may look back at that period with nostalgia or feel that their lives are not much better now than they were three years ago to recognize that his first term was a warning and that a second Trump term would be much more damaging and divisive than the first,” the board continued.
“Kamala Harris is the only choice,” it concluded.
The board had endorsed President Biden in the 2020 election, calling him “the leader our nation needs now.”
The race for the White House remains close between Harris and Trump. A recent Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll found Harris narrowly leading Trump in the swing states of Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and North Carolina.
The race will likely come down to the battleground states in order for one candidate to clinch 270 Electoral College votes.
