Paraguay pulled off one of the most stunning upsets of this World Cup.
Paraguay beat European power Germany 4-3 in a penalty shootout after regulation ended 1-1 in the Round of 32 at Gillette Stadium on Monday.
José Canale sent the winning penalty kick past German goalie Manuel Neuer in the sixth round to send Paraguay into the Round of 16.
Jonathan Tah, who missed his penalty kick later on, thought he had the winner with a header for Germany in the 102nd minute, but the goal was controversially disallowed on a goalie interference call. Germany was getting the better of play late in the second half and extra time as Waldemar Anton had his straight-on header off a corner kick saved in the 118th minute.
Julio Enciso gave Paraguay a 1-0 lead at the half by heading in a cross into the box by Galarza in the 42nd minute. That advantage didn’t last long, as Germany found the equalizer in the 52nd minute when Kai Havertz flicked Florian Wirtz’s long pass into the box with his head and into the right corner of the net.
Germany, ranked 10th in the world, was coming off a loss to Ecuador in their final group stage match.
