Ree Drummond is getting candid once again about her health journey. In an April 30 post on her blog The Pioneer Woman, the Food Network star shared that she’s returned to the same weight loss routine that helped her lose 50 pounds in 2021. After what she calls “natural fluctuations” due to lifestyle changes, Drummond says she jumped back into her plan in February. And so far, she says it’s already paying off like clockwork. Here’s everything Ree Drummond revealed about her updated weight loss: what’s different this time, and what’s stayed exactly the same.
Ree Drummond set realistic weight loss goals
Drummond admits that after staying consistent for a while, she eventually fell out of her healthy habits in late 2023. “I stopped exercising and kinda stopped paying attention to what I was eating,” she wrote. “Again, uh, this happens!” By February 2024, she says she knew it was time to reset, but with a softer approach. “I decided to jump back [into] the plan I’d found success with in 2021, just not quite as high a gear as the first time.”
Though she’s using the same methods as before, Drummond aims to be gentler with herself. “The very hardest part was the first week to 10 days. Today it’s not that hard at all,” she shared. “In fact, it’s actually rewarding as I’m feeling better and better all the time.”
Protein and muscle-building still work for her
Just like the first time, Drummond says the biggest game changers have been focusing on strength training and increasing her protein intake. “I’m building muscle again, which is crucial,” she wrote. Her routine includes lunges, squats, deadlifts and floor exercises with ankle weights.
She also makes protein a top priority in her meals. “I’m eating more protein and keeping it a higher percentage of my calories,” she said, adding that this combo made a big difference. “In February, the scale was pretty stubborn until I bit the bullet and started doing all the leg/butt exercises. Within a week, it kicked in.”
What Ree Drummond changed in her weight loss plan
Drummond shared she now has a more relaxed mindset when it comes to tracking food. In 2021, she weighed her food and counted calories daily, but this time, she’s not going that far. “I feel that after doing that for four or five months back in 2021, it really gave me more of an awareness of portion sizes and general calories,” she explained. Now, she’s relying more on intuition.
One weight loss app she still loves? Happy Scale. “During the year I was gaining weight, I didn’t use it very often. I’m using it again and forgot how helpful it is!”
Having a little wine won’t hurt
Drummond also made one big lifestyle change during her initial weight loss: no alcohol. “Last time, I did not consume alcohol for four months or so during the high gear period of my weight loss,” she shared. This time around, she’s allowing herself a glass or two with a twist.
“I generally have a little white wine then top off the glass with cold Topo Chico sparkling water,” she said. “So it’s kind of a wine spritzer type of thing.” It’s one small indulgence that still fits into her overall routine. Plus, it’s a great reminder that a weight loss journey is all about balance, not perfection.
Ree Drummond thanks her fans for their support
Drummond’s candid blog post quickly resonated with readers, especially those who have followed her health journey over the years. “I have to give it to you, Ree. You are good,” wrote one proud reader. “That’s the hardest part is to get back into your problem. Congratulations.”
She ended her post by thanking fans for their support and encouragement. “I heard from so many of you who read something in the post that resonated,” she wrote. “So just wanted to be sure to share again.”
