Rep. Pete Stauber (R-MN) exploded at Minnesota Gov. and former Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz on Thursday, accusing him of stolen valor and “barking down the wrong tree” during a chaotic hearing.
Grilling Walz over his previous false claim that he carried weapons “in war” as a member of the National Guard, Stauber asked, “Governor, what weapons did you carry in war?”
“Congressman, for 24 years I carried–” replied Walz, before Stauber interrupted, “No, no, no! What weapons did you carry in war?”
Walz responded, “What did you carry in uniform? You know I misspoke. You know I misspoke.”
“I’ll tell you what, governor, you’re barking down the wrong tree! Okay? You lied to the Minnesotans!” Stauber screamed as the House tried to restore order. “You said that you carried weapons in war! That is stolen valor!”
He continued, “You know what? My wife served 25, 24 years in the military and she’s an Iraq War veteran. She was over in the war zone! That’s stolen valor and I’m so disgusted with you and so are the people that you served with! That’s stolen valor! Stolen valor! You didn’t carry weapons in war! Will you apologize for lying? Will you apologize for lying?”
Walz received backlash during the 2024 presidential election after a 2018 video of him claiming to have carried weapons “in war” went viral.
“We can make sure that those weapons of war, that I carried in war, is the only place where those weapons are at,” he said during a speech on gun control.
Walz, who served for 24 years in the National Guard but never went to war, apologized for the remark, claiming he had misspoken.
