Rob Reiner Gave Heartfelt Tribute to Son Nick and Family at Ceremony Years Before Death

Rob Reiner gave a loving shout-out to his kids, including son Nick Reiner, during his 2017 Hand and Footprint Ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

During his speech at the event, Rob celebrated “the most important people” in his life — his family. The director name-dropped wife Michele Singer Reiner, daughter Romy and sons Jake and Nick. (Rob was being honored alongside his father, the late Carl Reiner.)

“Michele and Romy and Jake, my other son Nick is back in New York. I love you guys,” he told the crowd. “I wouldn’t be here [but for Carl] having sex with my mother, and you being supportive of me, and you wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have sex with your mother. I think TMI”

Rob is also the father of Tracy Reiner, whom he adopted during his first marriage to the late Penny Marshall.

The Princess Bride filmmaker’s shout-out to his son resurfaced days after news of Rob and Michele’s deaths broke on Sunday, September 14.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a spokesperson for the family shared in a statement on Sunday. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

The couple died at ages 78 and 70, respectively, and their official cause of death has been listed as “multiple sharp force injuries,” according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Nick, 32, was arrested in connection to the murders and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He is facing life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

Nick was seen for the first time since his arrest during a court hearing on Wednesday, December 17. According to a courtroom sketch, he was wearing a suicide prevention vest and appeared disheveled. Nick was accompanied by his attorney Alan Jackson but did not enter a plea. He did, however, say a few words.

Nick was addressed by the judge and responded, “Yes, your honor,” when asked if he wanted to waive his right to a fast arraignment, according to People. His arraignment was pushed to January of next year.

After the hearing, Jackson addressed a hoard of reporters outside the courthouse.

“This is a devastating tragedy that has befallen the Reiner family,” he said. “We all recognized that our hearts go out to the entire Reiner family. There are very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case. Those need to be thoroughly, but very carefully dealt with and examined and looked at and analyzed.”

He asked that the crowd allow the justice system to “move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward” and not jump to conclusions about the situation.

“We are set for January 7 for an arraignment. That’s the next court date, and that’s all I have to say at this point,” he concluded. “There may be more at some other point, but today we are going to rest on where we stand procedurally, which is this is a continuance of arraignment. Nothing happened today, substantively. We’ll be back for an arrangement in the same department on January 7. We’ll see you then.”
