At this point, the 49ers might want to get bigger suitcases.
After it had been reported that the 49ers and Rams would be playing in the NFL’s first-ever game in Australia — date to be determined but most are predicting week 1 — news broke Wednesday morning that the trip down under wouldn’t be the only time they leave the country this season.
According to reports, San Francisco will serve as the home team in a game at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City, Mexico.
While the date and opponent is to be determined, it’s clear the NFL believes in the 49ers’ international power as the league continues to expand its reach worldwide.
Running back Christian McCaffrey is one of the best and most popular players in the game.
He was named the 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year and after an injury-plagued season in 2024, responded to be named the 2025 NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
He finished the year with 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns on 311 carries, while adding 102 catches and 924 yards and seven touchdown as a receiver, league-highs for a running back. He finished the season with 2,126 yards from scrimmage, the second-most in the league behind Falcons running back Bijan Robinson.
Apart from two travels outside the country, the 49ers also have cross-country trips to Atlanta and New York (Giants).
