The state certified the results of the General Election on Nov. 19, making them official. They show that just over 50% of Bergen County registered voters cast a ballot in the Nov. 4 race, which elected the state’s next governor.
While turnout was lower than in previous years, Bergen County voters continued with their pattern of voting Democratic.
The voter turnout was a steep decrease from last year, when 67.7% of voters cast their ballots in the presidential election. While some counties’ voting patterns changed in 2024, Bergen County’s did not. As neighboring counties favored President Donald Trump in the election, Bergen County voted for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris with 232,660 votes to Trump’s 217,096.

That trend continued on Nov. 4, with Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill winning the county over Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli with an 11% lead. Sherrill received 190,461 votes while Ciattarelli received 152,682.
During the 2021 governor’s race, where Ciattarelli challenged Gov. Phil Murphy, voter turnout was even lower, with 41% of registered voters casting a ballot.
Ciattarelli lost to Murphy in 2021, but with a smaller margin difference in votes of 5.6%.
The general Assembly of the 39th legislative district was won narrowly by incumbent republicans Robert Auth and John Azzariti Jr. A less than 2% voter difference separated the winners. In 2021, Auth won with a larger margin despite fewer voters turning out, with a 5.7% lead.
Locally, Democratic Commissioners Tom Sullivan, Mary Amoroso and Germaine Ortiz won reelection to the Bergen County Board of Commissioners and defeated Republican challengers Jay Costa, John Dinice and Andrea Slowikowski by about 45,000 more votes.
Compared to their 2019 election, where only 28% of registered voters turned out, Sullivan Amoroso and Ortiz won with 20,000 more votes than their republican challengers.
The trend continued at the county level, as Democratic commissioners Tom Sullivan, Mary Amoroso and Germaine Ortiz won reelection to the Bergen County Board of Commissioners, defeating Republican challengers Jay Costa, John Dinice and Andrea Slowikowski.
