New Yorkers should check their refrigerators for recalled green onions possibly containing salmonella, according to a recall alert posted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on Oct. 18.

Church Brothers Farms issued the voluntary recall of 1,271 cases of green onions after a single product sample collected by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency indicated the presence of salmonella. The affected products were sent to a small number of retail and foodservice customers in Canada and 11 U.S. states, including New York. No illnesses have been reported as of Oct. 18.

Here’s what to know.

Most people infected with salmonella experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, the CDC said, with symptoms beginning six hours to six days after ingesting the bacteria.

And while most people recover without treatment after four to seven days, some people — such as children younger than five, adults 65 or older and people with weakened immune systems — may experience more severe illnesses that require medical treatment or hospitalization.
