STEVENS POINT – You will have a chance to participate in a town hall event with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders Friday as he brings his “Building Working Class Power” campaign to Stevens Point’s Pfiffner Pioneer Park bandshell.

The event will open its doors at noon and it is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., according to a news release sent by the Sanders campaign.

The town hall is free and open to the public but an RSVP is encouraged at a link provided by the Sanders campaign. Entrance will be provided on a first-come basis.

Free food from Backyard Burgers, ice cream from King Cone and live music by Tim Kinsella, Walt Hamburger and Carriage House will be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Portage County Democrats, the Wisconsin Democratic Seniors Council, and the WisDems Rural Caucus are partnering with the Sanders campaign to hold the event.

Sanders, 82, recently announced he would seek his fourth term as Vermont’s representative in the U.S. Senate, a position he’s held since 2007.

The event is part of a series of events Sanders is holding across the state between Wednesday and Saturday. He will be in Eau Claire Friday at 6 p.m. and will also visit Racine, Sheboygan, Appleton and La Crosse during his visit. Sanders’ events were planned separately from current President Joe Biden’s campaign events scheduled in Wisconsin this week.

Sanders last visited Wisconsin in September to participate in the Cap Times Idea Fest in Madison. At that event, he spoke about a book he co-authored with journalist John Nichols titled, “It’s OK to Be Angry About Capitalism.”

Nichols interviewed Sanders in front of a crowd at University of Wisconsin Memorial Union’s Shannon Hall and asked Sanders what inspired the optimism Nichols sees in Sanders’ campaigns.

“You see beautiful young people who really want to create a nation based on humane values, based on economic, social, racial justice,” Sanders said at the event. “When you see that with your own eyes, when you touch it with your own hands it’s hard not to be inspired and to be optimistic about the future.”
